Order Picking Wizard

A specialized system designed to ensure efficient and accurate order picking in warehouses and production facilities. It is part of a larger logistics ecosystem together with OMS, SCS, and SCO, and plays a crucial role in transforming an incoming order into a fully packed shipment ready for delivery.

My role and responsibilities

  • User research & workflow analysis

  • Designing the end-to-end user journey

  • UX architecture & information structure

  • Conduct user interviews with potential users

  • UI design & visual system

  • Interaction design & prototyping

  • Collaboration with cross-functional teams

Results

  • Reduced picking time per order through a new effective solution.

  • Decreased human errors thanks to guided flows and barcode/QR code validation.

  • Provided managers real-time visibility into picker performance when integrated with OMS.

  • Improved warehouse efficiency and shortened delivery times across the logistics chain.

User Story

We defined how pickers and managers interact with the system, what their daily challenges are, and which actions they must complete with minimal effort. These user stories became the backbone of the design process — helping us prioritize features, simplify workflows, and ensure that every screen directly supports real tasks inside the warehouse.

Process & User Journey

The user journey outlines each step of the picking workflow — from receiving tasks to completing orders, ensuring the system supports a fast, clear, and efficient process.

Final Design

The final design organizes the process into four clear stages — Tasks, Picking, Unloading and Packaging with a focused, easy-to-follow layout that keeps the entire workflow smooth, efficient, and consistent.

Tasks & Picking

Pickers receive assigned orders with clear priorities and item lists. This stage sets the structure for the entire workflow. The system guides pickers through the warehouse, showing item locations and enabling quick barcode scanning for accuracy.

Filtering

Filters by Date help track orders within specific time ranges, while Department filtering highlights tasks assigned to particular warehouse zones or teams

Unloading

Collected items are brought to the consolidation zone, where quantities and statuses are confirmed before moving to the next step.

Packaging

The packaging stage ensures every order is prepared correctly for delivery. At this step, the system guides the user to choose the right box size or create a custom package when needed.

Overall

The OPW delivers a clear, unified, and highly efficient system that supports the full picking workflow end-to-end. From task assignment to packaging, every step is simplified to reduce errors and speed up operations in real warehouse conditions. Consistent design patterns, intuitive navigation, and a modular system structure ensure that both pickers and managers can work confidently and quickly.
